Ultrasonic level transducer functionality is the same as the radar system. From ultrasonic profiling to level monitoring, ultrasonic sensors are used in a wide range of applications including converting electrical energy into acoustic waves and vice versa.
The working principle of ultrasonic level indicator
The ultrasonic level sensor works by the “time of flight” principle when it comes to measuring level. Sound waves are sent by the device at a higher frequency of about 20kHz to 1GHz. These sound waves bounce back from the product surface, creating an echo that is redirected to the sensor. Thereafter, the sensor determines the level by calculating the time taken by the echo to return back. The ultrasonic level sensor works in both liquids and solids level measurement.
The main advantage of ultrasonic level transmitter is that the transducer doesn’t make physical contact with the process material since it has no moving parts. This typical property is very useful for measuring tanks’ levels with boiling, corrosive and hazardous chemicals.
On the other hand, the return signal can be affected by things like heavy vapors, powders, foam, surface turbulence and also ambient noise. Moreover, the temperature can limit ultrasonic device functionality – ultrasonic level transducer cannot operate on high-pressure areas or vacuum. Finally, the level transmitter isn’t convenient if the depth of the tank is high or the produced echo is absorbed or dispersed.
